Size Matters: The Importance of Podcast Episode Length

In a quick scroll through the podcast app, you’ll discover that there is no standard protocol for the length of an episode. Podcast episodes can be as short as one minute and as long as many hours, so how do you know what is the best for your show?

While there is no gold standard, I would argue that strategically deciding the length of your podcast is an extremely important step in reaching your audience and creating consistent listenership.

In order to orient the length of your episode to your audience, first envision your listener and ask how, where, and when might they be listening?

Bite-Sized Episodes ~1–15 minutes

There is a specific market for short, bite-sized episodes, especially among listeners who operate on very tight schedules. Perhaps your target audience is a CEO tuning in during a short morning commute. Or, your audience might be a young parent listening in the school drop-off line, looking for some quick motivation to start the day. A short episode may be the best format for this audience.

This demands that your content is condensed and effective. Each episode should pack a punch with insight and motivation, so I recommend spending time scripting the show prior to recording.

Short Format Episodes ~30 minutes

A short format episode can be an ideal length for many audiences, especially those who listen at the same time of day. Thirty minutes could be the ideal time to listen while working out, commuting, during a lunch break, or while walking the dog.

While it may seem like plenty of time to share your content, it still must be packed with valuable information that inspires or motivates your listener. There isn’t much room for superfluous fluff or rambling.

Keep in mind, an interview format may not be the best for this length unless you plan to strategically edit down the conversation to fit the time frame.

Medium Format Episodes ~45-60 minutes

A medium length podcast can be ideal for interview-style episodes or storytelling. This provides plenty of space to incorporate ads and transition to various segments throughout your show.

Keep in mind, your audience must dedicate a significant part of their day to tune in. Perhaps this is a professional who has a longer commute, a parent who has multiple pick-ups and drop-offs, or someone who listens while working.

Long Format Episodes ~1-3 Hours

Long format episodes are ideal for interviews and conversations. Considering the length of the show, very few listeners will tune in and devote 100% of their focus to the conversation. Most will be listening while performing other tasks such as cleaning the house, working at the home office, or driving during a long road trip.

Many people who tune in to these episodes are looking for entertainment, insight, or human connection while alone for significant stretches of time, so keep it light, keep it personal, and keep it moving.

Some may listen to these long-format episodes in shorter segments spanning several days. To make this more natural, consider scheduled breaks during the episode, perhaps every 20–30 minutes to cue a good time for listeners to hit the pause button.

Consistency is Key

Once you determine the best length for your episodes, it is essential to keep it consistent. Your regular listeners will appreciate anticipating the length of the show and will be more likely to fit it into their listening schedule.
